Peruvian blueberries, August to January

Peru is the world's largest blueberry exporter, and its season runs when the Northern Hemisphere has almost nothing to pick. We source from growers in La Libertad, Lambayeque and Ica and check every lot for firmness, bloom and decay before it ships.

Why Peru

Counter season supply

Peruvian fruit arrives from August, when North American and European fields are finished.

Why Peru

Big, firm berries

Coastal desert valleys with long sunlight hours produce large, firm berries that travel well by sea.

Why Peru

Sea freight is the norm

Most Peruvian blueberries travel by reefer, which keeps landed costs down. Air freight is used for early season or short life programs.

In the field

Picked by hand, packed within hours

Blueberry quality is decided in the first hours after picking. We check how fast the fruit is cooled at the packing house, then firmness, bloom and pulp temperature at loading.

Quality inspection

What we check on every lot

Our inspector is at the packing house before loading. You receive the report with photos before the container leaves.

Condition

Firmness

Soft berries are counted by percentage. Firmness decides shelf life at the other end.

Appearance

Bloom

The natural waxy coating. Rough handling removes it and retailers notice.

Defects

Decay, splits, wet berries

Counted on a sample from each lot, with photos.

Size

Berry diameter

Measured against the minimum size in your specification.

Eating quality

Brix

Sugar content measured with a refractometer.

Cold chain

Pulp temperature

Probe readings at loading. Warm fruit in a cold container condenses and molds.
